Gearing up for Spring

I often get asked, “what do you do all winter when the Nursery is closed”? To me, that question always makes me chuckle. It’s generally the 3rd week of November before all of the plants are put away for the winter. During that time I’m also getting Spruce tops and Christmas greens delivered for Winter decorating. I also have a Winter container class, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. So for me it is generally mid December before my year is winding down. And then we all know how busy the Christmas holidays are for everybody.
Now we’re into the month of January. The annual Minnesota Nursery Landscape Association (MNLA) trade show and classes are held the first full week of January. With all the info acquired from the MNLA show, I start fine tuning my plant and hard good orders for Spring. Maybe some Garden center owners have this process all dialed in, but I’m always looking for new plants or material. I take this duty very seriously, making sure the new items are going to do what they claim. I look for these new things to help me and my customers better gardeners.
With those things taken care of, it’s time to start organizing and cleaning things in the greenhouses. That list includes everything from cleaning off walls and benches to organizing pots and baskets, needed for the new plants. Oh yah…..those new plants will be here in 4 weeks! It often feels like getting your house ready for bringing a new baby home. Once those babies arrive you won’t have time for those other things until they get rooted in. And then it just keeps getting busier…..sure is nice to have that break every Winter!
