Hydrangea Paniculata 'Limelight'
As plants go, the Limelight Hydrangea is not a new plant nor is a plant that your Mother grew up with. In my estimation, this Paniculata type hydrangea from Proven Winners, is a shrub that belongs in your landscape. With all of the different types of hydrangeas now on the market, people are almost overwhelmed with their choices. Hydrangeas fall into 4 categories, with each having very distinct looks and growing needs. The four categories of Hydrangea are the Arborescens, Macrophylla, Paniculata and Quercifolia. Arborescens, also known as smooth leaf Hydrangea, has only a few varieties. Annabelle, commonly called snowball hydrangea because of it’s large round white blooms, is probably the most common of all the hydrangea. The Annabelle can be found growing in almost any part of the USA. It is one of the few that is native to America. In just the last few years there has been a break through in the breeding of new Arborescens Hydrangeas. As of right now, they include the Incrediball from Proven Winners and the soon to be released, Bella Anna from Bailey Nurseries. The Macrophylla group is commonly called mophead hydrangea. The most famous member of this group is the Endless Summer variety. This the type of hydrangea, that allows the grower to change the color of the bloom to either pink or blue. The Quercifolia groups common name is the oakleaf hydrangea, for the obvious shape of its leaves. That brings us to the Paniculata group, which generally are much more shrub like with their woodier stems. This is the group that the Limelight hydrangea belongs to. The plant gets its name from the color of its bloom as it opens up. As the bloom matures it turns a crystal white, which you can see by my picture. As the season progresses the bloom slowly takes on a pink blush. The size of the blooms average a very large 6 to 12″ length. It is not unusual to see some Limelights with more than a dozen of these huge blooms. The stiff stems of this shrub hold these blooms high in the air for a beautiful show from July through the end of the season. The blooms also work great as dried flowers. Limelight is a shrub that will need yearly pruning to keep a tidy look. It can grow to a height of ten feet, but looks best when kept to height of around 5 feet. Because blooms grow on new wood, don’t be afraid to cut back this shrub to fit your space. I have found that Limelight grows well in a variety of conditions, from partial shade to full sun. With all of its attributes how can you not find a place for some of these in your landscape?
